Celebrate the 2010 Fish Season!
May 4th – June 20th
What is Fish Season?
Fish season at the Amoskeag Fishways occurs in the spring
when the fish ladder is operating. Migratory river herring, American shad,
and sea lamprey traverse the ladder's 54 steps to bypass the Amoskeag
Hydroelectric Dam. These species of fish are called "anadromous," which
means they are born in fresh water, live in the ocean as adults, and return
to fresh water to spawn (reproduce).
About 10,000 people visit the Amoskeag Fishways during this time of year
either as walk-in visitors or participants in a guided fish ladder tour.
In addition to seeing fish in our underwater viewing windows, visitors
of all ages will enjoy hands-on learning in our impressive exhibit hall. Guided
tours are available for groups of 10 to 30 people per tour. Larger
groups can be accommodated through multiple tours. There is a suggested
donation of $20 per tour. Tours are great for school
groups, business lunches, community groups, family reunions. Pre-registration
is required. Call 626-FISH to register.
